Surge protection for PV systems

A rooftop PV installation is exposed to surges caused by lightning strikes and switching in the grid. Surge protection devices divert excess energy to earth and protect the inverter and the building installation.

Types of surge protection devices

  • DC side - between the panels and the inverter, chosen for the maximum string voltage (e.g. 1000 V DC).
  • AC side - between the inverter and the grid, available in single- and three-phase versions.
  • Type 1+2 - for buildings with a lightning protection system or an overhead service connection; Type 2 - basic protection.
